Book Thoughts: Happy Little Family (Caudill)

  • delightfully innocent and amusing for all ages
  • the youngest of 5 finally is able to join her siblings in various activities
  • real-life instance of sibling bickering but kept brief and mild
  • language: shucks

Type: early chapter book
Ages: 3+ (listeners), 5+ (readers)
Author: Rebecca Caudill

Each of the five chapters is mostly its own little story but do happen in chronological order. The first is in winter, the second in spring, third in summer, fourth in fall, and fifth in December. Oh, and it’s based in Kentucky!

The first time I read this to my kids, they were seven and nine. I wondered if they would feel it “beneath” them as far as age goes, but I don’t think that thought even entered their minds. The author has a talent of writing from a four-year-old’s perspective that charmed us all! A sweet little book.
