Book Thoughts: The Giving Tree (Silverstein)

  • a very generous tree gives all she has to her favorite boy
  • in contrast, the boy is self-centered
  • deceptively simple book that can lead to a number of discussions
  • clean language

Type: picture book
Ages: 2-8
Author/Illustrator: Shel Silverstein

I am aware that there are mixed feelings about this book. Most reviews are either very high or very low. I get both sides. On one hand, you have sadness and death looming toward the end, so that’s an uncommon element in a children’s book. And there’s the boy’s selfishness.

On the other, you have a shining example of generosity. The tree never expects or asks for anything in return. She gives a part of herself each time the boy needs it. This is how parenting should be. This is how Christian living should be.

However, it is not a Christian book. The boy, when he is an old man, is sad and doesn’t show any sign of hope. Yet, the tree continues to serve him till the end.

I think you should definitely read it as a parent and then see how you want to proceed with it. I personally rated it 4 stars on Goodreads. You can follow me there by clicking this link–I usually just do the rating and a minimal review (often one word long), saving my real reviews for here. 🙂
