Book Thoughts: Gingerbread Baby (Brett)

  • a boy checks on his baking gingerbread person too early and out pops a baby gingerbread boy!
  • he runs away from all sorts of people and animals trying to catch him
  • the human boy thinks up a clever way to catch him

Type: board book, picture book
Ages: 0-4, 4-8
Author: Jan Brett

Recently we came upon a board version of this book, whereas, previously, we’d only seen a picture book. It was a must-buy for a young niece’s Christmas present!

Jan Brett often has a unique way of telling a side story in the illustrated margins while the main story is happening. Such is the case for this book, and readers will wonder what in the world that boy is doing. Why isn’t he out chasing the gingerbread baby like the rest of the crowd? You’ll see!

It’s Christmasy enough (because of gingerbread traditions) to warrant a place on my Christmas book lists, but it’s a great one for snowy/wintery book stacks as well. Happy reading!
