Book Thoughts: A Birthday for Frances (Hoban)

  • Frances struggles with the universal problem–jealousy of her sister’s birthday
  • several funny moments will be appreciated by young readers
  • convo topics: disrespecting parents, complaining

Type: picture book
Ages: 3-7
Author: Russell Hoban
Illustrator: Lillian Hoban

Another story in the infamous badger family! Frances eventually overcomes her emotions and is able to celebrate her sister kindly; however, she was almost pressured into it at the last minute, so I don’t think it sets the best example to young readers. It will, though, be relatable, because we all know how our children do similar things at times!
