Book Thoughts: A Baby Sister for Frances (Hoban)

  • Frances has stereotypical older sibling emotions when baby #2 is born
  • she plans to run away (but not till after dinner)
  • convo points: “good luck” charms

Type: picture book
Ages: 4-8
Author: Russell Hoban
Illustrator: Lillian Hoban

The cute part of this story is that she “runs away” to under the dining-room table, and her parents say they’ll miss her. Later, they talk about how things aren’t as nice without Frances (knowing she’ll overhear). Chatting sadly about all the things they liked about Frances is the majority of the story.

However, nothing else really has much merit. They ship her off to public school during the day and don’t parent her well (i.e., she never says please and they do whatever she tells them to do).
