  • language: x2 stupid
  • convo: wine mentioned, a pipe mentioned, magical creatures (of course!), definite vs. universal atonement*

Type: story book (each story its own chapter)
Ages: 6+
Editors: Kathryn Lindskoog, Ranelda Mack Hunsicker

*This came up in literally one sentence of the entire book, but I’m just being thorough with my reporting for you! I can point you to the story if needed.

Pointing to our Creator in the introduction, Lindskoog and Hunsicker begin the readers in the right spot: By keeping our eyes on Him who has the ultimate imagination (just observe His creation!), we are welcomed to broaden our own imaginations by entering these different worlds in the stories. Most are not directly Christian, but all encourage positive character traits.

I actually gave a star rating to each story the first time I read this book and can say that they were mostly fives out of five!

There is a really neat “Message to Parents and Teachers” section in the back about how fantasy and fairy tales can be used for making truth beam that much brighter–truth about the world, the people around us, and the God who made it all. Of course (and the author readily admits this), not all fairy tales are beneficial for readers. This is expounded on and followed by a WONDERFUL list of reasons why children “need fantasy tales of moral and literary excellence.”

All of that is followed by suggestions for capturing the imagination of Christ and then short biographies on each featured author. We love this book!
