- a German city is decimated in WWII, creating countless refugees seeking safety
- through unique circumstances, one family takes on the responsibility for an elephant, who journeys with them
- a romance briefly mentioned a few times–it’s always appropriate and they eventually marry
- language: a few instances of lying, x2 holy cow, d*amn, what in hell’s name
(not counting the lying, these words were only on one page toward the end) - violence: occasional descriptions of bombing, Jews being mistreated, and other warlike talk*
- religion: a couple instances of holding hands around the table while each silently prays
Type: chapter book
Ages: 10-14
Author: Michael Morpurgo
*I was pleasantly surprised at the level of intensity maintained throughout–it never went too high. The violence described was completely appropriate for the intended age group, in my opinion.
This is loosely based on a mix of true stories the author has authenticated (per his note in the back), so that’s neat!
The children disrespect their mother a few times, but it’s minor and simply “real life” feeling. Their relationships are overall very good. The lying I mentioned above saved lives, but it is still a sin–perhaps touch on that with your reader if you feel it necessary.
There is a sad parting with the dear elephant toward the end, but there is a good twist to it–you’ll see!
I’d say this is a very safe historical fiction book for your middle graders to enjoy if you are comfortable with the above notes!
