Type: chapter book
Ages: 11-15
Author: Kathryn Butler

* Please note that this series has been heavily allegorical, which is the main reason I even mention “revelation.” Lily hears Pax’s voice (the Jesus figure) when no one else can. Some families may want to touch on this point, if needed. Again, Butler is not adding words to actual Scripture, but because Pax represents Jesus, I mention it.

All right, we made it through the whole series! If you’ve read my reviews on the first four books (linked below), you’ll have a decent idea of how this book is. Lily, who turns 13 in this final book, is joined by many of the series’ past characters in their final battles against the shrouds.

The Satan character possesses someone we know from a past book. I don’t know if it’s my scars from past horror movies my college friends would watch or what, but this was the creepiest part of the book for me. Just a heads up.

There was an occasional poignant message woven into the storyline. I appreciated Lily’s conversation with her Gran in chapter 21, revolving around the fact that it’s not up to them, mere created beings, to ultimately restore the world. To translate the allegory a bit: It’s up to the Creator. And how do we do our part? What is the next right thing? To faithfully obey His commands. Share His truth. Truth conquers all.

Another one was something Pax says to Lily later on, but I’ll avoid a spoiler by adding a blank to the name:

“Never underestimate a changed heart, Lily. No one who I have chosen can ever be snatched away, and ________’s name was in my book from the beginning.”

Throughout the series, there have been surprise literary references that we’ve enjoyed spotting. This particular book has an exciting focus on King Arthur! Medieval times fans are sure to enjoy those parts.

From flying ships to centaurs, Butler installs a lot of fantastical elements that will engage the imagination. Young readers are sure to like this series, though older readers might find it much too cheesy for their tastes. If you’re looking for fantasy that highlights faith, friendship, redemption, and courage, see if this will be to your taste!
