Book Thoughts: Comet’s Nine Lives (Brett)

  • a cat has many accidents, each of which he considers one of his “nine lives”
  • after each accident, a transparent cat with wings flies off the page
  • side panels tell another angle of the story, in classic Jan Brett style
  • beautiful illustrations–many details to study

Type: picture book
Ages: 4-8
Author: Jan Brett

This one might be a little tough to explain to a four-year-old, since it involves “deaths” which aren’t really deaths, but it’s surprisingly gentle. From a pile of books falling on him to eating toxic flowers to too-loud music from a tuba, Comet loses his “lives” one by one. Eventually, though, he finds a safe and wonderful place at which to live the rest of his life.

Anyone who likes lighthouses or sea stories will enjoy this story.
