Book Thoughts: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Dahl)

  • wacky & often hilarious
  • chapter on Charlie’s family starving can upset emotional listeners
  • language: good heavens x8, gosh x1, golly x3, heck x2, a** x1, shut up x2
  • possible convo*: drunkenness, respecting elders
  • delights the imagination!

Type: chapter book
Ages: 6-9
Author: Roald Dahl
Illustrator: Quentin Blake

I am not a big fan of Roald Dahl in general, BUT this was the cleanest of his that I’ve read.

*The drunkenness was one small scene in which the kids & parents simply heard through a closed door Oompa Loompas laughing a lot after testing alcoholic candies. Also, 4 of the kids are extremely naughty and/or disrespectful, but it contrasts with Charlie’s well-mannered behavior (and provides a very extreme example for kids!).

I wish the language issues weren’t in the book, but if you can get around that (skipping over or replacing), it’s really quite a good read-aloud.
