Book Thoughts: A Chair for My Mother (Williams)

  • a realistic fiction story about a family who saves every penny for a comfortable chair
  • convo: their house burned down in the past and the little girl remembers it
  • neighbors and relatives share their love and generosity
  • poignant, moving and beautiful

Type: picture book
Ages: 4-8
Author: Vera B. Williams

This book surprised me! I actually teared up when the neighbors rallied around this poor family who lost everything in the fire. They gave what they had and helped them rebuild their lives. The relationships between the daughter, mother and grandmother are endearing. Since the young girl is the one telling the story, we automatically see things with more hope and joy than we might have, as her innocent outlook on the situation lifts us up. Definitely recommend checking this one out.
