Book Thoughts: Carl’s Summer Vacation (Day)

  • a young girl and her dog, Carl, get into all sorts of playful mischief when the mother is expecting them to be napping
  • 7 of the 28 pages have a little text (it’s mostly a wordless book)
  • beautiful watercolor-style illustrations
  • convo: obedience

Type: [mostly] wordless picture book
Ages: 3-6
Author: Alexandra Day

Reading this as a parent, I couldn’t help but be displeased–with both the daughter for disobeying and with the mother who had no idea where her small child was all afternoon.

BUT, that obviously wasn’t a point the author was trying to make. Ha! It’s simply meant to be fun and entertaining to young readers, and, to that end, the book certainly succeeds. The dog and child have many delightful adventures.

The book concludes with a picnic with friends and, later, fireworks, so there’s a bit of Independence Day in there, too. I’ll categorize this under both Summer and 4th of July, so you can find it again!
