Book Thoughts: The Book of Dragons (Nesbit)

  • each chapter is a stand-alone story featuring a dragon
  • content note: magic, wizards, fantasy lands, fantasy creatures, pipe smoking, a young man kisses a princess, a few “white” lies, a nod to evolution*
  • language: stupid x3

Type: chapter book
Ages: 7-12
Author: E. Nesbit

Each tale is wildly different from the rest! Be prepared for dragons wreaking havoc as well as eating people! If you’re familiar with her writing style, you’ll understand me when I say: In Nesbit fashion, a dragon is described to have eaten an entire orphanage in an entirely nonchalant manner.

(Spoiler…all eaten people end up fine!)

* The “nod to evolution” in my bullet points above isn’t as assaulting as it can be in some stories. Plus, being in a fantasy land, it’s easy to overlook.

Nesbit had quite the imagination! It’s amazing how so many of her books have stood the test of time. Are any of hers a favorite of yours?
