Book Thoughts: Bird House (Gómez)

  • a young girl and her abuela rescue a small bird
  • based on the author’s childhood
  • charmingly upbeat & gentle
  • unique & inviting illustrations

Type: picture book
Ages: 2-7
Author: Blanca Gómez

I love this little picture book. It’s a quick read and, oh, so sweet. The grandmother (“abuela”) definitely has a special relationship with her granddaughter. It’s impossible to tell whether she is just visiting her abuela or lives with her, but either way, there’s a loveliness about their interactions.

The bird they rescue is nursed back to health and released. Meanwhile, they build a small bird house in case it’s needed in the future. Young readers will be delighted when the cute yellow bird returns for a visit in the spring.

Happy reading!
