Book Thoughts: The Biggest Bear (Ward)

  • on many “classic” children’s literature lists
  • premise is negative (prideful boy) but overall story is memorable*
  • a tame bear eventually taken to a zoo
  • convo topics: feeding wild animals, gun safety, pride
  • incredible sepia-toned illustrations

Type: picture book
Ages: 4-7
Author/Illustrator: Lynd Ward

*Basically, the boy is humiliated by his family, but it’s all in his head. There’s no mention of anyone teasing him. So, the rest of the book is in response to this pride issue.

I have no problem letting my kids read this. Gives us good talking points in a clean way.
