Book Thoughts: Berlioz (Brett)

  • an orchestra of bears get stuck on the road to their concert
  • all sorts of comical attempts made to rescue their wagon
  • funny ending
  • marvelous illustrations (set in beautiful Bavaria)

Type: picture book
Ages: 2-7
Author: Jan Brett

In many of Brett’s books, you’ll discover an amusing sub-story within the illustrations. This one is no exception. Lots to study!

It’s a great book by itself but could also make a nice addition to a music study. You’ll see a lovely variety of instruments: a double bass, tuba, trombone, violin and more.

Bonus fun: In writing this short review, I happened upon a video of Jan Brett reading the book. I didn’t even know she had a YouTube channel! Before reading it, she had some neat facts of how she created the story as well as a visit from her husband and his double bass (the instrument Berlioz plays). Click here to watch it (the story reading begins at 4:50).
