Book Thoughts: Be Nice to Spiders (Graham)

Be Nice to Spiders (Graham) | keenlykept.com
  • a zookeeper and others discover just how useful spiders can be
  • convo: one [fairly obscure] drawing shows a child sticking out his tongue to mother
  • delightful, vintage illustrations

Type: picture book
Ages: 4-8
Author: Margaret Bloy Graham

Billy leaves his spider at the zoo, because his new apartment doesn’t allow pets. The zookeeper loses track of her, and she makes herself at home–first in the lions’ enclosure, later in others’.

The animals have been besieged by flies, but the spider’s web building, cage by cage, puts an end to that.

Kids will love to watch her webs being built and enjoy the overall style of storytelling. It’s a classic but somewhat hard-to-find picture book that you should absolutely read to the young ones in your life if you get the chance.
