Book Thoughts: Christian Heroes, Then and Now: George Müller (Benge)

  • biography of a Prussian man who eventually begins an incredible orphan ministry
  • initial chapters expose readers to his rowdy behavior before Christ saved him
  • convo: an unbiblical spanking (out of temper), beer & drinking mentioned, gambling
  • language: “stupid” a few times
  • many, many miracles God gave in response to faith-filled prayer

Type: biographical chapter book
Ages: 8-15
Authors: Janet & Geoff Benge

This book started off with a bang! We were captivated by the story right away. At the time of writing this, I’ve only read one other in the series, on Eric Liddell. That one was a little more intense than this one about Müller, which explains the age difference.

George Müller was a gifted man in many ways, using those gifts to obediently serve our heavenly Father to the best of his ability. Thousands of lives were changed through his orphan ministry (and more). His convicting example of faith and trust in God is not common. May we strive toward something similar.

Definitely read this one aloud to your family!
