Book Thoughts: Beavers (Gibbons)

  • informative book on beavers’ habits, habitats, family structure, physical traits, and more
  • mentions humans as their worst enemy but how that has improved
  • brilliantly colored illustrations

Type: non-fiction picture book
Ages: 6-12
Author: Gail Gibbons

I always find it fascinating to see beavers’ process in building their dams and lodges! The book is chock full of beaver facts, but Gibbons was able to make it attractive to children with the colorful illustrations and well-placed text.

It’s pretty long, so it might work well to study in sections, if you’re using it for curriculum. For a shorter, very gentle picture book that is more in story form than this one, see Henry Cole’s “Building.”

Hope you enjoy this book as well as we did!
