Book Thoughts: Beatrix Potter, Scientist (Metcalf)

  • true story of the famous author, Beatrix Potter
  • focuses on her interest in science and nature, especially mushrooms
  • convo: slight emphasis on women’s rights agenda
  • lovely illustrations

Type: picture book biography
Ages: 4-8
Author: Lindsay H. Metcalf
Illustrator: Junyi Wu

This was an intriguing peek into a totally unfamiliar part of her life. As a bookish family, we, of course, are very familiar with her books, but the history of her scientific interests was new to us. The faint hint of agenda-pushing had me clicking further into the biography of the author after I read the book. Turns out, agendas are practically all she writes about–from LGBTQ+ to climate change to immigration policies and more. Sigh. This book alone is fairly benign, but don’t consider this an author recommendation by any means.
