- written from the perspective of a child who endures the Japanese-American internment camps during WWII
- his dad initiates baseball games at their Camp, which helps time pass and also boosts spirits
- the boy is name-called (“Jap” is said twice) and isn’t treated well just because he is Japanese, but he overcomes it
- another boy is disrespectful to his father once, within the stressful confines of the Camp
Type: picture book
Ages: 8-12

I highly recommend finding time to read a serious book to your child on occasion–not just the fun ones. This was a horrible part of America’s history, and it should be remembered. Overall, the book delivers its powerful message very well.
Another picture book we appreciate regarding these Camps is “Write to Me” by Cynthia Grady.
