- delightful tale of a girl being adopted at age 11 by an older brother and sister duo, set on Prince Edward Island
- vivid imagination, charming and witty humor, relatable coming-of-age moments, and so much more
- language: x3 stupid, x1 fudge
- convo: pipe/smoking mentioned, alcohol (with one incident of accidental drunkenness), Anne bemoans her red hair, talks about liking boys (Anne is a few years older by then and it is kept appropriate), a few superstitious comments, a few fantasy creatures mentioned, a hanging mentioned, spankings/whippings mentioned (one from the past and not described, the rest just considered)
- religious convo: occasional God-related comment surprisingly correct, but there are a few instances of misguided theology (minor to story)
Type: chapter book
Ages: 9-16
Author: L.M. Montgomery
A book that gets better with every re-read! Anne is incredible likable. Her tendency to talk (a lot) is entertaining for a wide variety of reader types/ages. Her dramatic responses to certain situations will be very relatable to the middle grade/teens who pick up this book. And she ponders all sorts of deep questions, like:
Which would you rather be if you had the choice?
1. To be divinely beautiful or
2. Dazzlingly clever
3. Angelically good
What would you choose?
Anne quickly makes friends with other children through school and has quite the memorable experiences with certain neighbors. It’s a close-knit community, and she is woven in as if she’d always belonged to it.
She turns out to be quite the smart young lady, reaching big milestones and earning various scholastic accolades. Anne reads a lot and likes to quote or reference what she has read. Just for fun, I’ve created a printable that tracks all these references to real books, poems, plays, and more. Use it to track what you’ve personally read and then re-read Anne for a richer experience! (Find it here.)
Who is this book for? So many! Young writers, those with adoption as part of their story, nature lovers, readers who simply cherish delicious words, poetry lovers, creative and active types, and people looking for some sweet amusement.
It’s a 5-star recommendation from me. Happy reading!
