Book Thoughts: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Carroll, Ryan)

  • a 7-year-old girl mysteriously enters a world full of nonsense and absurdities
  • talking animals, word puns, a dramatic queen, food that makes the eater shrink, and more!
  • language: x2 stupid, x1 idiot
  • convo: brandy mentioned, wine mentioned, a hookah is smoked

Type: chapter book
Ages: 7+
Author: Lewis Carroll
Worldview Author: Amanda Ryan

Meant to be funny, Alice’s adventures are both confusing and entertaining. Your child might find many scenes funny while you, if reading as an adult, might grasp more of the word puns tucked in here and there.

Since you and I probably don’t have the same version (Goodreads records almost 19,000 editions!), I’ll make this part short. My latest reading of the short book was Canon Press’s version which includes a biblical worldview guide. The guide was written very well! Amanda Ryan made some brilliant points resulting from her obviously thorough research. Parents should note that she touches on an historic accusation–that Charles Dodgson (whose pen name is Lewis Carroll) dealt with pedophilic temptations. She stresses that there is no evidence for it. You can read more of that within the guide.

If you like silliness and feel in the mood for a wild book full of nonsense, have at it!
