Book Thoughts: A Big Changed Happened (Strickland)

A Big Change Happened (Strickland) | keenlykept.com
  • a young whale’s life is shaken when his mother announces they’re going on a long journey, far away from everything he knows and loves
  • themes include: resting in God’s protection, facing change with courage
  • convo: some ambiguous theology
  • good appendix in back, “Guide Your Children Through Big Changes”

Type: long picture book
Ages: 4-8
Author: Darby A. Strickland
Illustrators: Kevin & Kristen Howdeshell

I loved Strickland’s first two books that were written along a similar vein–that of helping children work through types of trials. Something Scary Happened (review) touches on fear and trauma, while Something Sad Happened (review) wrestles with grief. Both of these were clearly grounded in Scripture, well-written, wonderfully illustrated, and conclude with additional resources for families.

That is why I bought this book without even flipping it open (a rare act on my part). But I was less than thrilled with the story itself. It was wordy and didn’t read aloud well. The theology topic I mention above is likely not a great concern to most parents. The repeated line I refer to is this: “God’s love follows you, wherever you go and whatever you do.” Some families are guarded against phrases like that, with the idea that it’s teaching children they can do whatever they want and God will love them all the same. There’s no indication Strickland is communicating this, but I mention it to be thorough.

All that said, there were definitely some good components! It gave a great example of the need for patience, for trusting parents’ wisdom, and for braving the unknown. Little readers will love the colorful illustrations. And the parents’ guide in the back includes comforting Scripture and practical suggestions to help children navigate big changes such as a move.

Just be ready for a longer read if you pick it up. 🙂
