Book Thoughts: Out of Darkness (Freedman)

  • excellent recounting of Louis Braille’s history
  • story brought to life with well-crafted words
  • interesting & educational without feeling like it
  • easily holds kids’ attentions

Type: biographical short chapter book
Ages: 8-12
Author: Russell Freedman
Illustrator: Kate Kiesler

An extra bullet point could be: might cause 7- and 8-year-olds to start writing notes in Braille 😆.

The only other thing I’d note is when they talk about “the best possible gift” on page 76. I inserted “besides salvation, of course.” 😊

Really enjoyed this one!
