Read-Aloud Recommendation for the Burgess Animal Books | keenlykept.com

Who Was Thornton W. Burgess?

Burgess was an American writer who lived from 1874 to 1965. He was highly involved with various conservation efforts, which shows in his nature-focused stories. During his lifetime, he published over 170 books and 15,000 newspaper stories. His most well-known books in the juvenile world form a “series” (using that word loosely) of animal stories that have charmed generations of children.

What Ages Did Thornton W. Burgess Write For?

This particular animal series can be read by (or to) very young ages. Its sweet spot may be preschool or early elementary but is known to be enjoyed by kids even older than that.

Are There Religious Elements to Burgess’ Animal Series?

Yes, but minimally. Burgess was a naturalist who cared deeply about conservation and humane treatment of animals. His books occasionally refer to “Mother Nature,” as he [incorrectly] attributes various aspects of nature to her rather than the Creator God. However, most books in this particular animal series do not refer to Mother Nature, so there is very little religion. Note: In other books not in this article’s focus, you will read Mother Nature references much more frequently.

Where Can I Find His Books?

Many places! This animal series is entirely in the public domain, so you can find ebooks at gutenberg.org, audiobooks at librivox, org, and inexpensive paperbacks on Amazon. Your library might also have resources, both physically or digitally.

Do Burgess’ Animal Books Need to Be Read in Order?

Not at all. Enjoy picking and choosing which animal you want next. They all overlap with characters, but there is no carryover between plots which needs to be read in any certain order. Kids will have fun deciding on their next main character.

Is There A Way to Track Which Books I’ve Read?

I’m glad you asked! I’ve created two printables to share with you today. The first is a simple and straightforward check-off of 30 titles in Burgess’ animal series. Instead of providing an overwhelming list of all his works (!!), I narrowed it down to 30 main stories with 30 different animals as the focus. If there are particular ones you like more than others, there’s a good chance Thornton has another story for you. For example, if Buster Bear was a favorite, read Buster Bear’s Twins.

The second printable is for those who enjoy artsy ways of tracking reads!
