Book Thoughts: The Rescuers (Sharp)

The Rescuers (Sharp) | keenlykept.com
  • 3 mice perform a daring rescue of a human prisoner
  • funny and enjoyable read-aloud for the family
  • convo: mentions beer & wine, a male whistles at a female but mentioned as a negative, cigars mentioned, mentions prisoners dying*
  • language: x4 idiot

Type: chapter book
Ages: 6-10
Author: Margery Sharp
Illustrator: Garth Williams

One of the most delightful read-alouds we’ve encountered! The words flowed so well when spoken, the subject was light and family-friendly, and sweet bits of humor were woven throughout.

* This portion was the cause of my only hesitation to recommend for younger ages, so please see if it’ll be a good fit for your family. Prisoners are marched through barren lands to their prison destination. The horses taking that road later are scared to pass the bones of the dead, who were never moved from where they fell. Fetters were still attached, too. This was a very small part of the narrative and would be easy to skip and maintain the storyline.

Your younger children might struggle with the more sophisticated vocabulary in parts, but overall, it’s a fun little rescue story. I recommend!
