Book Thoughts: He Bear, She Bear (Berenstain)

  • rhyming message that both genders can do whatever job or activity they want
  • convo: feminism, mentions and depicts a magician levitating her assistant
  • colorful and classic “Berenstain” style illustrations

Type: picture book
Ages: 4-8
Authors: Stan & Jan Berenstain

The not-so-subtle attempt to break gender stereotypes left an unattractive taste in my mouth. In reading this as a Christian, I agreed with one angle: there is a myriad of ways people can use their gifts and explore their interests. But that is not what the authors were communicating. There was no biblical element in this book. It also leaned more heavily on the “girls can do all the boyish jobs” side of things. She Bear (aka Sister Bear) was the main speaker throughout.

I had naïve hopes for this one–that it would clearly communicate there are only two genders/sexes–but that was not the case. It’s not a book I recommend.
