Book Thoughts: The Mermaid (Brett)

  • an underwater rendition of the tradition “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”
  • a mermaid enters the home of an octopus family, eats their breakfast, falls asleep in baby’s bed
  • exquisite illustrations (the mermaid is modestly designed!)

Type: picture book
Ages: 4-8
Author: Jan Brett

When I met Jan once, she mentioned how she’s much more of an artist than a writer. I agree, but I say that kindly. Her books are quite lovely, yet the text can sometimes be a weak point. This particular story has a few random things that made me actually look to see if I missed a page. 🙂

That is a minor point, though. There are other elements of this book that might thrill your young readers! What’s more exciting underseas than mermaids! And to imagine such a sophisticated life at the bottoms of our oceans can be thrilling.

I think her original Three Bears version is my top favorite of her renditions, but this is a perfectly fine story to read. There is nothing concerning to note!
