Book Thoughts: The Yellow Star (Deedy)

  • tells the legend of how Denmark saved the majority of their Jews from the Nazis
  • themes include: good leadership, protecting the innocent, resisting evil, working together
  • convo: pipe in one illustration, mentions Jews were “taken away and not heard from again”
  • beautiful illustrations keep the story light (note: one illustration shows a storefront blacked out with a graffiti Nazi symbol on its door)

Type: picture book
Ages: 5-10
Author: Carmen Agra Deedy
Illustrator: Henri Sørensen

The author’s note in the back describes why this is more of a legend than history (or historical fiction), and which parts were actually true in Denmark’s history. She leaves an unanswered question on the table for readers: “What if we could follow [their] example today against violations of human rights?”

This is quite a gentle introduction to the atrocities of World War II. I definitely recommend it if you’re ready to begin sharing about that time period with your children.
