Book Thoughts: Dr. Seuss’s Horse Museum (Joyner)

  • unique mix of fictional illustrations with actual works of horse-based art
  • the art is from many different time periods, showing a large variety of styles
  • convo: mentions a cave painting is 22,000 years old
  • illustrations are not by Dr. Seuss but similar style

Type: educational picture book
Ages: 5-10
Author: Dr. Seuss (based on some of his manuscripts)
Illustrator: Andrew Joyner

This really is a great overview of the different styles of art. It’s only a page or page spread for each. Even if your child isn’t particularly interested in horses, it’s still a great introduction. We start to see horses the way the artists saw them, which is neat.

The back includes more details on each included piece of art as well as photos of Ted Geisel’s (aka Dr. Seuss’s) sketches and notes for this book idea. The almost-finished manuscript was found over twenty years past his death.

Overall, I recommend it!
