Book Thoughts: The Prisoners, the Earthquake, and the Midnight Song (Hartman)

  • tells the tale of when God used Paul & Silas to save a jailer and his family
  • interactive & captivating
  • energetic illustrations
  • beatings & suicide mentioned (not by that term*)

Type: biblical picture book
Ages: 3-8
Author: Bob Hartman
Illustrator: Catalina Echeverri

*The line is: “You see, if the jailer’s prisoners escape, then he must die…So he takes his sword to take his own life.” It is quickly resolved on the next page.

Highly recommend this one! It brings to life the story but also instills theological truths into young minds–most particularly, how one can be saved and given eternal life. You can read the Biblical story in Acts chapter 16, and the note in the book gives more related Scripture references. See if you can read a copy!
