Book Thoughts: A Lion to Guard Us (Bulla)

  • three young siblings have quite the adventure traveling from England to Virginia
  • fictional characters placed into an actual historical tale from the early 1600s
(an interesting “Historical Note” is included)
  • the children are mistreated at times, but they become quite self-sufficient
  • convo: a couple deaths, a superstitious belief of devils causing problems

Type: short chapter book
Ages: 7-10
Author: Clyde Robert Bulla

I read this aloud to my kids when they were 7 and 9. They have read (or heard read) stories much more intense, but there were still a few difficult scenes to work through. Bulla, however, has a way in all his books to communicate difficult parts to children in a controlled way. I’d even say a “safe” way.

The most entertaining part might have been how they survived on the island for a while, but it’s overall a good read-aloud I recommend!
