Book Thoughts: Beethoven’s Heroic Symphony (Celenza)

  • tells of one particularly exciting chapter of Beethoven’s life
  • ties into history regarding Napoleon Bonaparte
  • convo: women depicted in low-cut dresses, suicide is alluded to, specter mentioned
  • no language concerns

Type: biographical picture book
Ages: 6-10
Author: Anna Harwell Celenza
Illustrator: JoAnn E. Kitchel

If you know much about Beethoven, you know that there were many sorrowful aspects to his life, including his childhood. But that is not the focus of this book; rather, it tells specifically about how his “Heroic Symphony” came to be created.

With the above caveats for discussion, I recommend this book for any studies on Ludwig Van Beethoven or Austria (this particular part of his life happened in Vienna). Then definitely listen to the symphony!
