Book Thoughts: Beyond the Orphan Train 01 – Looking for Home (Richardson)

  • first in “Beyond the Orphan Train” series, set in 1907 Pennsylvania
  • a sibling set is sent to a home for orphans after their mother dies
  • an 8-year-old boy assumes much responsibility for his younger siblings
  • convo points: beer mentioned, mild bullying (resolves well in the end)
  • biblical principles and lessons woven throughout

Type: chapter book
Ages: 7-12
Author: Arleta Richardson

This book pleasantly surprised me! It was a very well-written page-turner. I appreciated how clean the language was and how the adults took such good care of the orphans, both physically and spiritually.

There is a sub-story concerning a rich, shallow, and extremely selfish lady. She learns a big lesson and becomes much kinder and mature by the end.

We also learn in the Notes at the back of the book that this was based on a true story, so that’s neat.

Looking forward to reading the rest of the series!
