Book Thoughts: Little Pear (Lattimore)

  • a gentle and upbeat story following a young Chinese boy and his escapades
  • the boy is mischievous but learns to “be good” by the end of the book
  • convo points: good luck charms, good/bad spirits superstitions
  • clean language

Type: chapter book
Ages: 5-7 (younger if listening)
Author: Eleanor Frances Lattimore

Interestingly, the author is an American citizen who was born and raised in Shanghai. A lot of her stories are based off of real experiences and are true to culture.

In all likelihood, you, as a parent, won’t agree with how Little Pear was disciplined (or not disciplined, which is more often the case). However, it is really such a mellow book, it’s hardly influential toward real life.

Overall, it was a pleasant read-aloud for my children and me.
