Book Thoughts: The Little Wooden Shoe (Van de Hulst)

  • mystery in a small village concerning a little wooden shoe found floating on water
  • a boy confesses his misdoings and feels much remorse
  • the adults plan a way to publicly tease him–he was embarrassed but relieved
  • convo points: pipe smoking mentioned
  • clean language

Type: short chapter book
Ages: 5-7
Author: W.G. Van de Hulst
Illustrator: Willem G. Van de Hulst, Jr.

I’ve seen this book series for years and finally purchased a couple to check them out. It was originally written in Dutch and has been decently translated.

The end where the adults pull off their surprise for the little boy was a bit odd to me. Perhaps it’s more of a cultural difference, so I’m not going to put up a big fuss about it. It’s just not how I would have handled it. 😉
