- stunning biography of artist Winslow Homer (1836 – 1910)
- full of his art–a mix of more well- and lesser-known
- convo: mentions drinking, smoking, cursing (no actual words)
Type: very long picture book
Ages: 9+
Author: Elizabeth Ripley
The mere quality of this book is top-notch–from its physical features to its format. Ripley is a great writer, too, so definitely seek it out if you’re interested in art of American history.
As a Christian, some aspects of Homer’s life turn me reflective. I find myself asking questions like, “At what point is it necessary to stifle an apparent gift in order to be present with people…and ‘lose time’ doing what we love?”
His story has a sad undertone in this biography, so it makes me curious how other researchers report his life. Either way, we learned a lot about Winslow Homer (and fell in love with his art all over again), and I’m looking forward to reading more of the series!
