  • retelling of the biblical story of Ruth, Naomi, & Boaz
  • remarkably faithful to Scripture
  • convo: other [false] gods a thread throughout as Ruth compares them to the true God, deaths mentioned, some people are unkind toward Ruth because she’s an outsider, a woman slaps another once, marriage and having babies is a main topic but kept matter-of-fact, wine mentioned
  • language: stupid x7

Type: chapter book
Ages: 8+ (possibly lower if a read-aloud by parent)
Author: Katy Morgan

I am blown away by Katy’s ability to tell a story we know so well, capture our interest, and still remain true to Scripture. She adds details, of course, that the Bible doesn’t share, but they are very plausible and never stray too far from the narrative we have in Scripture. It is clearly fiction. Then, toward the end, she tells the strictly Biblical account (all the way through Jesus) so that the reader’s focus is repositioned toward the most important words. God’s words.

Katy Morgan seems to have a solid grasp on the gospel and on Jesus’s role as our Redeemer. She beautifully weaves the truth about God’s kindness in and out of the story as Ruth feels His embrace and protection she knew she didn’t deserve. We are all outsiders like Ruth as we are all sinners, so this story sharpens our awareness of the need for a Savior. We need Christ, and it is a priceless thing to be invited into His family.

Oh, and she reads her own audiobook–fantastically. Because I listened to it, I don’t yet have the book in hand (I’m going to listen to more and then hopefully buy them all!), but I understand there’s also an appendix that clearly shows readers what is fictional and not. Great resource for parents.

If you’ve been around a while, you know I research Christian authors more and hold them to a higher standard. She belongs to a church with solidly biblical beliefs, and I am comfortable recommending her.

You can be sure I’ll be checking out more of Katy Morgan’s books soon. Thankful for this new resource!
