Book Thoughts: Far to Go (Streatfeild)

Margaret Thursday 02: Far to Go (Streatfeild) | keenlykept.com
  • sequel to Thursday’s Child, in which Margaret finds success in acting and runs into an old enemy
  • convo: children speculate a few times that a particular old woman is a witch (she’s not, but she is mad/crazy), a child is kidnapped, brief mentions of orphans not being fed well and sometimes beaten, some drinking (minor to the story)

Type: chapter book
Ages: 9-12
Author: Noel Streatfeild

This was significantly shorter than the first book, not allowing for as much connection to the characters. However, if you know Margaret well from the first book, it’s an enjoyable read. We get to briefly see old friends, but this book mostly focuses on her new ones. Like book one, she has plenty of adults in her world who are looking out for her, which seems so rare in much of children’s literature!

The main additional thing I will point out to parents is that she is extremely determined to make a name for herself. She refuses all kind offers to help her in various ways and fiercely perseveres to find huge success all on her own.

As far as I can tell, the author never indicated a third book was coming before she passed away. I didn’t see anything about unfinished manuscripts, and I looked because we are left with some significant questions unanswered.

But, overall, it was a good little story that kids younger than nine could probably handle, depending on the child. Hope this helps!
